“My request is to find him and, in one way or another, allow me to see him again”.

It is 1954. Italy is devastated after the war. On a usual, mundane morning, a mysterious letter arrives at Marco Zamboni’s private detective office. Enclosed inside are two letters asking for his help to find her husband whom she has pursued for nine years across two oceans, five countries, and many more cities. The sender’s name is Yi-Sé. An Asian. ‘Something doesn’t add up,’ Marco thinks. Immediately suspicious, Marco heads to Melograno, a newspaper company in Florence, to consult with his most trusted friend Frederick D Leopardi only to realize a tragedy awaits him ahead.

This book is about love and tragedy and everything in between.

This novel encapsulates the theme of the human condition from different perspectives. At one point, this book is about the attempt to romanticize life in post-war Italian neorealism. On another, this is a serious inquiry into the meaning of life. In its conception, this discursive piece is meant to express what poetic death is. The book thrives on unrequited love, post-war trauma, cultural metamorphosis, and feminism. Yet, one should not forget that this is about beauty and tragedy. It incorporates the aesthetic and existentialist elements into which the trained minds can delve and take away the joy of musing over philosophical discussions.
